About Mudders Day

Mudders Day is many things to many people… here is what our lovable billy has said..

Mudders Day is a celebration and honoring of our original mother, the earth and all she provides; our food, water , clothing , shelter and all that we need to sustain life. We invite everyone to join us in sharing our common understanding of what’s required to grow our own foods and medicines and protect our air, water and the land itself. Mothers bring your children , children bring your mothers and we’ll all share in a great day of fun, music, teachings, storytelling, to bring cultural and social awareness to our defense of the earth and all the blessings she offers.

Jayme wrote another funding application, this one to the Elizabeth May Chair in Sustainability & Environmental Health;  here are some of the things she has said….

Mudders Day:  a celebration honoring local plants, earth, and mothers is a make-our-own-festival festival conceived and organized by students with community members.  The original intention of this event was to encourage and enable more urban agriculture and food security.  The core motivation expanded as we partnered with a Mi’kmaq elder and the Mi’kmaq Friendship Centre to working at the deeper level of celebrating the cultural heritages that have a land stewardship ethic.   The event has now found a huge community embrace through the theme of celebrating plants, earth and mothers.  Our intention is to strengthen the social fabric, celebrate our community organizations working for social and environmental justice, build community capacity to organize, and nurture specific projects working for local food security and community resilience.   The event is now partnered by the Ecology Action Centre, the  Voice of Women, the Nova Scotia Public Interest Research Group, Oxfam, local farmers, the Midwifery Coalition, multiple community garden organizations, International Development student societies and organizations, and more.

We are still one week before the event and already there are over 150 people participating in making Mudder’s Day a magical community celebration!  Already, people are saying that they are learning, finding joy in personal growth, and building new relationships.   While I trust that the community will come together to fund this event, we are gratefully accepting financial contributions.  The community has already adopted this event as an annual affair, and so any surplus funding we gather will be used to enable next years Mudder’s Day: a celebration honoring local plants, earth, and mothers.

Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to hearing your ideas on how to make this event even stronger, broader, and more integrated in the future.  May the forest be with you!
