About “Us”
We are an ad-hoc group of organizers pulling together this festival for Big Mama, for the grassroots community, and most of all, for the fun of it.
The idea originally began in thinking about some sort of event to start the garden season off right. We moved from gardening, to wanting to strengthen the social fabric and our cultural heritages that hold us in relation to the land, to Big Mama. In order to help the rooted ones, we need to foster a culture of land stewardship.
Billy Lewis, a Mi’kmaq elder has been integral in forming this event. He helped to organize Honor Mother Earth Day on Toronto Island for years; so came the inspiration to host this event on Mothers Day and call it “Mudders” Day. Jayme Melrose has been central in “doulaing” (attending & assisting to give birth to) this project, we all give her many thanks and hugs!
thank you to those who have given their incredible energy and time over the past while…
