The Red Tent
Our Red Tent is hosted by the Midwifery Coalition Of Nova Scotia & The Volunteer Doula Program
Historically, the Red Tent was a sacred space where womyn would go during their moon time to bleed and during labour to birth. It was seen as a place of essential femininity, birth and maturity. It was a sacred gathering place for womyn where they would take time from their daily duties as mothers and wives to spoil themselves with cake and rest upon the straw. In the tent they would relax and share wisdom, stories and gossip. It is in the tent that womyn would forge, break, and rebuild their bonds to one another.
While some have viewed this practice as a way to segregate
womyn and keep them out of the public eye during their times of
“impurity” many have come to see, and even reclaim, the tent as a
place where womyn can go to recharge, and empower one another through the act of storytelling.
On Mudders Day, in honour of mothers’ day, all mothers and mother earth, we invite you into the tent and into our community. We want you to hear our stories and become empowered to tell your own.
Our Red Tent is hosted by The Midwifery Coalition of Nova Scotia & The Volunteer Doula Program. We believe in sharing, storytelling and education by womyn for womyn and those who love them. We aim to support each womyn to make confident, genuine, and educated decisions about her fertility, sexuality and birthing options.
All people are welcome to join us in the red tent.
