Yahooo! the paradigm shift is happening… Here are some other events we support

Mudders Day Film Screening!

We will be showing a number of short (many locally produced) films to get us all stoked for the upcoming season of local food and urban agriculture! Among others, we have Oren
Hercz’s fim “Charles’s Farm” on the lineup, Louise Hanavan’s short on the Musicians for Farmers event held last winter at the North Street Church, a film on Naked Bike Riding and a film produced in Vancouver all about geurrilla gardening.

The screening is being held to raise some much needed funds for the Mudders Day festival. As you know, the festival will be free for everyone to attend - but is unfortunately not free to produce!
Location: Halifax North Branch Library

Time: 6:30pm-8:30pm

Date: Thursday May 8

Cost : by donation (all proceeds go to make Mudders Day possible)

Pro-Choice Action

URGENT ACTION REQUIRED to protect womens’ right to choose

Campaign Life Nova Scotia (www.clcns.com <http://www.clcns.ca/>) is organizing two actions this week against womens’ right to choose. A group of women’s centres and organizations, student groups, labour activists, and individuals have come together to organize the Halifax Coalition for Choice to defend womens’ right to choose.

We are calling for immediate counter demonstrations at Campaign Life’s events. Details below.

Wednesday, May 7th

Campaign Life is organizing a candle light vigil outside the Victoria General Hospital, 1278 Tower Road (South Park Entrance) at 8:00 pm. Pro-choice activists are urged to meet at 6:00 pm at the Wardroom in the Arts and Administration Building at the University of King’s College to help prepare placards and signs. We will then be heading towards the VG for 8:00 pm. Folks may also meet us at 8 at the hospital.

Thursday, May 8th

Campaign Life is organizing a demonstration in front of Province House starting at 11:45. Pro-choice activists are encouraged to gather at Parade Square at 10:45 for a rally and march of our own.

It is important we mobilize to defend womens’ right to choose. Currently a private members bill, Bill C-484, is before the federal parliament. This bill would amend the Criminal Code to allow separate homicide charges to be laid in the death of a fetus when a pregnant woman is attacked. This bill endangers abortion rights, the rights of all pregnant women, and women’s rights in general.

Anti-choice supporters have gained new momentum from the election of the Harper government and urgent action is needed to protect the right to choose.

Be There.

If you cannot attend on Wednesday or Thursday but would like to be involved with the Halifax Coalition for Choice please let us know.

Also please consider writing a letter to the editor about why the right to choose must be protected or calling your MLA and urging them to attend the pro-choice rally.

Wild-Harvesting Guerrilla-Gardeners

Wild-Harvesting Guerrilla-Gardeners are a group of people dedicated to learning about, planting and utilizing native wild plants of Nova Scotia. We have been working on establishing beds in the city, preparing to plant them up with wild plants in hopes of having the plants thrive in the city setting along side the people of the city. Wild plants have so much to offer, food, medicine, fiber and having those qualities close at hand with the knowledge of them to back them up is something that is needed for the future.

We do our gardening on public and private land usually in spots that have once been a garden but no longer used, or in spots that are waste space and need plants to help heal the land and bring a bit of beauty to it. We ask permission to garden were ever possible but if no one can be contacted about the space we go ahead and garden anyways. Of course we do this gardening out of the kindness of hearts and ask for no money for our skills.

The Guerrilla-Gardeners meet weekly at Agricola and West St. at 2:00, the location that was once the One World Cafe. This week we will go to the train tracks to the spot we were harvesting black berries last year and dig up some of the berries to bring back to one of our sheet mulch beds to transplant them there. Hopefully we will also find some wild rose to transplant and raspberries may be also be available.

Please come and join us this Sunday. No garden experience is needed, come and learn about the plants that grow in the wild and help make the city a more bio diverse place to live with our wild food, medicine and fiber at our finger tips. Bring a bike if you have one as we will be riding to the train tracks which are a ways a way. Also bring a pair of gloves as we will be be handling prickly bushes. Most of all bring your self!
